ALLENDALE COUNTY, S.C. — For the first time in more than ten years, the
Allendale-Fairfax High School graduation rate has surpassed the State’s graduation rate. The percentage of students graduating on-time in 2019 – 2020 reached 87.3% which is the highest AFHS has as far back as 2008.”
What is Going on in Allendale?
For years the Allendale County School District has been the poorest performing district in South Carolina. Four years ago, State Superintendent Molly Spearman decided the State should take over the district. Three years ago she hired Dr. Margaret Gilmore to be the superintendent.
On Friday, June 4, 2021, SCORS was invited to attend the 2021 Kindergarten graduation at Fairfax Elementary School in Allendale County School District. Outfitted for the occasion in caps and gowns (complete with tassels) and matching facemasks made by Teacher, Ms. Suzette Williams, 52 students marched into an auditorium to the strains of Pomp and Circumstance. The room was as packed with parents, grandparents and assorted well-wishers as a socially distanced gathering could be.
Thanks to Ms. Marilyn Davis, the school’s guidance counselor, the stage, which was the backdrop for the celebration and later for graduates to pose in front of for pictures, was festooned with congratulatory banners and balloons.
Honored guests included six kindergarten students who ran the program. The reception line consisted of Superintendent Dr. Margaret Gilmore, Elementary School Principal Dr Beverly McCullough, and Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum & Instruction, Mr. Johnnie Miller. The Guest Speaker, Carter Patterson, is a first grader. Young Mr. Patterson, who has been on the Principal’s Honor roll for four quarters, wrote his own speech about how to succeed in first grade.
Mr. Thomas Leso, the Elementary School Music Teacher, led the graduates in a spirited performance of the song, “Everyone Matters”.
This is the last year anyone will be attending the Fairfax Elementary School as the District is building a beautiful new wing onto the Allendale Elementary School. That school will be renamed the Allendale-Fairfax Elementary School. The wing will house the 6 week-old through 3 Year-old Program, the Pre-School Program for 3 and 4 year-old’s, and grades Kindergarten through 2nd grade.
The Beat goes on in Allendale County School District!
